IS CONCRETE SAFE FOR PLANTS OR FOOD-SAFE?

Yes, as long as it has been leached off excess alkalinity. Concrete is a mix of cement, aggregates (sand, rocks) and water. Cement is made with limestone and gypsum. Limestone is alkaline. After concrete cures, a fine dust is left on the surface. That’s limestone. Leaching process involves soaking the finished concrete vessel under water for 48 hours.

IS CONCRETE WATERPROOF?

Not in its natural state. Concrete is very porous (hydrophilic). It’s very similar to clay (terracotta) or unglazed ceramics. Much like these materials, concrete needs to be sealed in order to be waterproof. Studio West Shop concrete vessels are sealed with bees wax and mineral oil (Kosher, FDA approved, safe for human consumption).
